Digital Signage Technology

We all know how effectiveness of digital signage, but what about the technology used in digital signage?

Digital signage, also known as dynamic signage, is a form of advertisement technology that uses a display screen, video or multimedia player, and a content management server. Once all three components are installed and in place, a computer is used to upload videos or multimedia content to the display screen. The result is a bright, interactive message or advertisement targeted at specific locations in specific times. The digital signage technology is considered to be a ground breaking tool in the advertising world. It is a combination of several of the greatest technologies combined into one great idea: digital signage.

Display screen and Content Management:

Digital signage supports several display screens. But the most common display screens used in digital signage are LCD or plasma screens, LED boards, projection screens or other emerging display screens like Organic LED screens. However, LCD and Plasma display screens have become increasingly popular over the years due to their rapidly dropping prices and quality of picture. LCD and plasma display screens have proven to not only deliver excellent picture quality, but also longer life expectancy as opposed to their predecessors.
Content displayed on a screen in digital signage is played from at least one media player that is connected to the display screen. The content is then downloaded to the main server and then uploaded into the media player. Another option is to insert the DVD that contains video or slideshow content into the medial player, which is then played on to the display screen. There are also various other software and hardware options that are sometimes used to control scheduling and playback content. For example, an advertiser may want to playback a specific video or slideshow at a specific time. Or better yet, an advertiser may want to schedule specific content to be played at a specific time throughout the day.

All three components of digital signage must be connected before usage. To connect the three components, audio-video wiring is required between the display and media player and then between the media player and content server. The connection between the media player and content management server is usually through an Ethernet connection or WIFI networking.

In order to manage the network, a management server is required for digital signage. The management server must be connected to the digital signage software in order to manage and organize new and old content. Without the content management server, there is no way to manage the content of digital signage. Once the management server is connected, one has to choose whether the network will be open to the web or not. If the network is closed to the web, updates must be made through USB or DVD drives. However, if the network is open to the web, updates can be made remotely through the internet.
